What a Pound and a Kilogram Actually Are

A pound and a kilogram are two ways of describing the same physical quantity: mass, the amount of matter in an object. Mass is constant — it does not change when you travel to the Moon or stand on a mountain. (Weight, the force that mass produces under gravity, is what shifts.) In modern legal and scientific use, the pound and the kilogram are both anchored to the SI base unit of mass via a single exact conversion factor: 1 pound = 0.45359237 kilograms. That is not a rounded value or a measurement; it is a defined identity that has been in force since the 1959 International Yard and Pound Agreement.

The kilogram itself underwent a profound redefinition in 2019. For 130 years, the kilogram was defined by a single platinum-iridium cylinder kept in a vault outside Paris — "Le Grand K." The trouble was that physical artefacts drift: even cleaned and stored under three nested bell-jars, Le Grand K's mass changed measurably relative to its sister copies over the decades. On 20 May 2019 the General Conference on Weights and Measures replaced it with a definition tied to the Planck constant, fixed at exactly h = 6.62607015 × 10⁻³⁴ J⋅s. The kilogram is now defined indirectly through that constant and a watt balance (Kibble balance), which means every kilogram measured today and every kilogram measured a century from now will be identical regardless of what happens to any physical object.

The Conversion Factor

Pound–kilogram conversion is one multiplication. There is no offset, because both scales read zero at zero mass. The international avoirdupois pound — the pound used in the US and the UK for everyday weighing — is fixed exactly to the kilogram:

How to Convert Step-by-Step

  1. Identify the source unit (pounds, kilograms, stones, or ounces) and the target unit.
  2. Convert any composite value (e.g. "11 stone 4 pounds") into a single unit first by multiplying stones by 14 and adding the leftover pounds.
  3. To go from pounds to kilograms, multiply by 0.45359237. To go the other direction, divide by 0.45359237 (or multiply by 2.20462262).
  4. For ounces, divide by 16 to get pounds first, then convert to kilograms or grams.
  5. Round to one decimal place for body weight, two for grocery scales, and four for laboratory work.

Worked Examples

Example 1 — Adult body weight

A weight of 165 lb converts to 165 × 0.45359237 = 74.84 kg. Most US bathroom scales display in pounds; most European and Asian scales display in kilograms. A doctor in either country would record both to one decimal place.

Example 2 — British "stone" reading

A British person says they weigh "11 stone 4." That is 11 × 14 + 4 = 158 lb, or 158 × 0.45359237 = 71.67 kg. The stone is still ubiquitous in UK speech for personal weight even though kilograms appear on official medical records.

Example 3 — Airline baggage limit

Most international airlines cap a checked bag at 23 kg, which equals 23 × 2.20462 = 50.71 lb. Several US carriers cap at exactly 50 lb (22.68 kg). If your bag reads 51 lb at the counter, you are 0.45 kg over the metric limit and almost certainly going to be charged.

A Brief History of the Pound

The pound's name comes from the Latin libra pondo — a pound by weight — which is also why its abbreviation is "lb". The Roman libra was about 328.9 g, and successor states inherited it in dozens of slightly different versions over a thousand years. By the late Middle Ages, England alone used at least three pounds: the tower pound (about 350 g, used for coinage at the Royal Mint until 1527), the troy pound (373.24 g, still used today for precious metals), and the avoirdupois pound (453.59 g, used for general commerce). The avoirdupois pound — "goods of weight" in Norman French — eventually won for everyday trade because its sub-unit, the ounce, divided neatly into 16ths that mapped onto common scale weights.

The 1959 International Yard and Pound Agreement, signed by the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, South Africa, and New Zealand, finally fixed the avoirdupois pound at exactly 0.45359237 kg. Note the asymmetry: the kilogram defines the pound, not the other way around. The US also retains the troy ounce (31.1035 g) for gold and silver bullion, and the apothecaries' pound survived in pharmacy until the late twentieth century. On the metric side, the kilogram has been the base unit of mass since 1799 and was redefined via the Planck constant in 2019, retiring "Le Grand K" from active service.

Stones, Ounces, and the British Habit

The stone (st) is a traditional British unit equal to exactly 14 pounds, or about 6.35 kg. The UK officially adopted the metric system decades ago, but the stone has survived in everyday speech for one specific application: body weight. A British person describing their weight will almost always say "eleven stone four" rather than "158 pounds" or "72 kilograms." In Ireland the same convention persists. Outside the UK and Ireland the stone is essentially unknown — Americans state body weight in pounds only, and the rest of the world uses kilograms. The ounce, by contrast, is alive everywhere imperial units are used, most often for cooking ingredients and small parcels. Sixteen ounces make a pound; one ounce is 28.35 grams.

Common Misconceptions

  • "Pound and kilogram measure weight." Strictly, both measure mass. Weight is the gravitational force on that mass and is properly measured in newtons. The colloquial use is fine on Earth where gravity is roughly constant.
  • "1 lb is approximately 0.4536 kg." No — it is exactly 0.45359237 kg. Anything less precise is a rounded display, not a different physical reality.
  • "A troy ounce equals an avoirdupois ounce." They do not. A troy ounce is 31.1035 g; an avoirdupois ounce is 28.3495 g. Mixing them up has caused real losses in precious-metals trading.
  • "The metric ton, US ton, and UK ton are interchangeable." A metric tonne is 1,000 kg. A US short ton is 2,000 lb (≈ 907 kg). A UK long ton is 2,240 lb (≈ 1,016 kg). Always confirm which one a contract uses.
  • "Le Grand K still defines the kilogram." Not since 20 May 2019. The kilogram is now defined by fixing the Planck constant exactly.
